CanStage and Dancap Private Equity Inc. present
the CanStage production of
Book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni & James Rado Music by Galt MacDermot
Toronto, ON… It is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius and The Tribe is rebelling. American youth are screaming out against The Establishment, Vietnam, segregation and sexual rigidity. Hair, the iconic 60s musical, is part pop, part rock, part nostalgia, and total visual delight. Recapture your spirit of hope in a strife-torn world. Hair includes such popular hits as "Good Morning Starshine," "Where Do I Go?" and "Let The Sunshine In."
"The excitement of mounting the first professional Toronto production of this landmark musical in over 30 years is truly remarkable," enthused Martin Bragg, CanStage's Artistic Producer. "We are incredibly fortunate to have James Rado, one of Hair's original creators, working alongside our outstanding creative team and exceptionally talented, young (aged 20-29 years) cast. James has made significant alterations to the script in recent months and I believe this will be a groundbreaking new interpretation that will blow people away."
The CanStage production of Hair marks the third time that Dancap Private Equity and CanStage have joined forces to bring a large musical to Toronto. Directed by Robert A. Prior and choreographed by Stephen Hues, the all-Canadian cast includes Matthew Boden as Margaret Mead, Matthew Brown as Hud, Craig Burnatowski as Berger, Karen Burthwright as Sheila, Kimmy Choi as Crissy, Kevin Dennis (CanStage's Beard of Avon) as a tribe member, Gerrad Everard as a tribe member, Ryan Field as a tribe member, Alana Hibbert as Dionne, Bryan Hindle as Apache, Andrew Kushnir (CanStage's Sweeney Todd) as Woof, Jamie McKnight as Claude, Adrienne Merrell as a tribe member, David Mongar as a swing, Katrina Reynolds as a tribe member, Julius Sermonia as a tribe member and dance captain, Valerie Stanois as a swing, Zachary Stevenson as a tribe member, Sheena Turcotte as a tribe member, Cleopatra Williams as Jeanie, and Naomi Zara as a tribe member.
Joining Robert A. Prior and Stephen Hues is a creative team that includes musical director Steve Hunter, set and costume designer Dany Lyne (CanStage's Twelfth Night), lighting designer Jock Munro (CanStage's The Goat or, Who is Sylvia?), sound designer John Lott (CanStage's I Am My Own Wife), and projections designer Yo Suzuki of Lovemushroom Studio, aerial consultant Decker Ladouceur of Cirque Sublime, associate lighting designer Joshua Hind (CanStage's Rice Boy), stage manager Lauren Snell (CanStage's Homechild), assistant stage managers Louise Currie (CanStage's The Dreamland) and Zeph Williams (CanStage's Homechild) and assistant director Brendan Healey.
After its inaugural run off-Broadway at the New York Shakespeare Festival Theatre in 1967, Hair found a temporary home at the New York disco The Cheetah. On April 29, 1968, amid controversy and acclaim, Hair made its Broadway debut at the Biltmore Theatre where it ran for nearly 2000 performances. Its London West End premiere took place later that fall and the production ran until 1973. Hair opened in Toronto at the Royal Alexandra Theatre on January 11, 1970 and has played to audiences in cities around the world over the past four decades. A movie version was directed by Milos Forman in 1979 starring Treat Williams and Beverly D'Angelo (among others).
