TORONTO, May 28, 2009 – Toronto businessman, philanthropist and theatre impresario will speak at the Empire Club luncheon on
June 4, 2009 at 12:00pm. The luncheon will take place at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in the Upper Canada Room.
In a speech entitled “Lights... Orchestra...Curtains: Bring on the best of world-class live theatre”, Mr. Dan, President of Dancap
Productions Inc., will share his vision not only of the theatre market in Toronto and across Canada, but also of the value of the art
form to Canadian society. Mr. Dan will speak about his company’s role in a vibrant and growing worldwide entertainment economy
and why he has taken a role as impresario in theatre – a business in which risk is inherent. His remarks will include his view of the
Toronto market, his belief that the commercial theatre business in the city is both ripe for and in need of competition, and why the
results can be spectacular for the economy of the GTA.
Mr. Dan, born and raised in Toronto, graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in
Administrative and Commercial studies. He received an honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree (honoris causa) from
Assumption University in 2008 and belongs to the Young President's Association (YPO) Ontario Chapter, is a
Baycrest Board Member, and member of the Institute of Private Investors (IPI). Shortly thereafter, he joined his
father’s company, Novopharm where he led as Director of Sales. In 1995 Mr. Dan’s father appointed him to run
the Novopharm subsidiary, Wampole, Canada Inc.
Mr. Dan is the founder and President of the following Canadian companies: Dancap Private Equity Inc., a firm
investing its own funds from a $50 million investment base; Dancap Global Asset Management, a company with a singular mandate
to build wealth over the long term; Dancap Productions Inc., a commercial theatre company dedicated to producing the best of
Broadway-style theatre, and Dancap Catering Inc.
In addition to his business ventures, Mr. Dan is a philanthropist, donating millions of dollars to health and education charities. He
and his wife Marla have made more than $20 million in donations to organizations resulting in programs such as Sunnybrook’s
Aubrey & Marla Dan Program for High Risk Mothers & Babies, the University of Western Ontario's Aubrey Dan Program in
Management and Organizational Studies, Baycrest’s Reuben Cipin Healthy Living Community, the Judy Dan Wound Care Centre, and
the University of Toronto’s Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy.
